Excerpts

Book 1 – The Good Horse

“Suddenly, Jai sprang upright and as fast as lightning he grabbed the tail of a four-foot-long rattlesnake about to bite Blackie on the nose. He swung it around in the air like a lasso making it giddy before taking it away from the barn and releasing it far enough away to find food elsewhere.”

Book 2 – The Good Snake

“Maree had just started to move the bale where Slithers was, by pushing it along the floor, when Imogen ran in front of the tractor.  She had realised that Slithers had not become aware of the tractor and Imogen had to protect and save him.  Maree braked hard not to hurt Imogen and some bales fell off the tractor’s front forks onto Imogen.

Imogen cried with pain and it was clear that two things had happened.  The first was that Slithers was able to move out of danger, allowing the rat to escape and, the second was that a falling bale had broken Imogen’s leg.”

Book 3 – The Good Lion

“With mouth still wide open the lion moved his head to almost touch Marty’s head.  Looking inside the open mouth of a lion is a very scary thing, add to that a bad breath (because lions don’t have toothbrushes) and the closeness of those teeth, and TERROR is what you feel.

Marty tried to move but the lion placed a heavy paw on his neck adding more fright than you can possibly imagine.  He was much bigger and stronger and Marty was absolutely powerless to help himself.”

Book 4 – The Good Crocodile

“Again the crocs surfaced, one in the creek facing the bank and the other near the bank but facing the other croc and ROSS WAS IN THE MIDDLE!

Ross wondered what part of him the crocs would eat first and what it would taste like.  The croc facing the bank looked bigger and hungrier and moved closer to Ross.  It opened its huge mouth, teeth glistening and terrifying.”

Book 5 – The Good Clam

“In doing this the stingray had made the water quite muddy and impossible to see through but Charlie kept walking and put his foot onto something soft.

Immediately he felt a strong pressure around his leg.  It hurt, but worse still, he could not move his leg.  He had stood right into the open shell of a giant clam.”

Book 6 – The Elephant

“I froze on the spot, unable to move, my heart pumping at a million beats a minute.  I KNEW I WAS DEAD.

For some reason I was unafraid and braced myself for the impact and possibly some really nasty injury caused by a thousand tonne monster crashing into me at full speed.  Elephants can run very quickly…”

Book 7 – The Good Polar Bear

“He opened his eyes and looked right into the mouth of the LARGEST POLAR BEAR IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE!!  Its teeth were enormous, as long as a Texas Longhorn’s horn and paws as big as the wheels on his four-wheel drive parked safely at home thousands of kilometres away. He was petrified.  The bear roared so loudly beside his ear that he thought he would be deafened forever and forever seemed very close at that moment.  The bear gave Yang’s ski coat a very strong pull and ripped it from his weary body – NOW YANG KNEW HE WAS IN BIG TROUBLE!”

Book 8 – The Good Gorilla

“He then grabbed Dan’s arm and threw him to the ground.  His white teeth shone brightly in the sunlight.  He put his foot on Dan’s chest to hold him down and beat his hands on his chest.  If there was ever a cranky meaner looking threatening gorilla then this was it!”

Book 9 – The Good Dolphin

As it approached its jaws opened so wide that it could easily have swallowed Nikki whole but looked like it would prefer to eat her one bite at a time and enjoy gaining revenge for its earlier embarrassment…with about a body length separating them its already wide open jaws opened wider showing row upon row of the sharpest, most pointed and cruellest teeth you could ever imagine!

Book 10 – The Good Hippopotamus

“At the last moment the hippos swerved around the trembling and frightened pair and easily rolled the vehicle onto its roof crushing its empty cage as well as the vehicle cabin, trapping its three passengers inside.

Three hippos stayed with the poachers circling the vehicle whilst Mumma and the other two chased after the Harry and Frankie, who could not outrun them.”

Book 11 – The Good Dog

“The dingoes left Jersey for a moment or two to chase Monty away but Monty had to help.

Facing the dingoes reminded Monty of his younger days when he thought (as do humans) that he was as good as superman.  A bite here and a bite there convinced Monty that any battle between them would leave him battered and bruised or worse and that maybe the dingoes would think that Montmorency soup would go down well with a fillet steak lunch.”

Book 12 – The Good Wolf

“The alpha male made it quite clear that both Jaime and Ben looked yummy – just right for filling the empty bellies of the hungry wolves.

Although the threat of being eaten by wolves was very present, Jaime still had the feeling of being watched, which would not leave her, and, somehow that feeling made her less afraid.”

Book 13 – The Good Rhinoceros

…a huge elephant known to the other animals as “Gigantor, the cranky one” wanted a drink.  For no reason at all Gigantor charged at Ceros as fast as he could and bumped him with his giant tusks.  Luckily the tusks went under Ceros’ belly and he was thrown in the air landing heavily on his back.  Ceros was concerned that his son would be hurt when he stood up so he chased Blanco to safety.”
